Background of the Study
Family size has been identified as a critical socio-demographic factor influencing students’ academic performance. In Ogbomosho South Local Government Area, Oyo State, larger family sizes are often associated with limited parental attention and resource allocation per child, which may negatively impact academic outcomes (Ademola, 2023). Studies have demonstrated that when families have many children, financial and emotional resources can become stretched, affecting the support each child receives (Olufemi, 2024). Moreover, variations in family dynamics, such as parental involvement and educational expectations, also contribute to differences in student achievement (Babatunde, 2025). This study examines the extent to which family size influences academic performance by analyzing the balance between available resources and educational needs. Understanding these relationships is essential for developing targeted interventions that can mitigate the adverse effects of large family sizes on education and promote equitable academic opportunities.
Statement of the Problem
In Ogbomosho South, larger family sizes are suspected to adversely affect students’ academic performance due to diluted parental attention and limited resources (Ademola, 2023). This situation may lead to lower academic achievement and reduced educational support for each child. Despite this, there is a lack of empirical data on how family size specifically influences academic outcomes in this area. This study seeks to investigate the relationship between family size and academic performance, identifying the underlying challenges that large family sizes impose on educational attainment.
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the influence of family size on academic performance.
To explore the relationship between resource allocation and student achievement in large families.
To recommend interventions that support students from larger families.
Research Questions:
How does family size affect academic performance?
What challenges do large families face in providing educational support?
What measures can mitigate the negative impact of large family size?
Research Hypotheses:
Larger family size negatively impacts academic performance.
Limited resource allocation in larger families contributes to lower achievement.
Targeted interventions can improve academic outcomes for students from large families.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the influence of family size on academic performance, offering insights into how socio-demographic factors affect education. The findings will aid policymakers and educators in designing support programs for students from large families, thereby enhancing academic outcomes and promoting equitable education in the community.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to assessing the influence of family size on students’ academic performance in Ogbomosho South Local Government Area, Oyo State. It does not extend to other socio-demographic factors.
Definitions of Terms:
